Shoukhrat Mitalipov – Director, OHSU Center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy
Shoukhrat Mitalipov, Ph.D., is the director of the OHSU Center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy at the OHSU School of Medicine and a world leader in the realm of genetic therapy. In August 2017, Mitalipov and his team published the results of the first known successful attempt at repairing a gene mutation in human embryos in the United States providing new insight about the workings of DNA, the foundational building block of life. Using a gene-editing tool Mitalipov effectively repaired a disease-causing mutation in a human embryo that would prevent it from being passed down to future generations. He holds seven U.S. patents in gene therapy techniques.
